Students protest as OAU raises school fees by 300 percent – Yesterday, university officials at Obafemi Awolowo University in Ile-Ife, Osun State, announced an increase in tuition.

According to a statement released yesterday by the University’s Public Relations Officer, Abiodun Olarewaju, newly admitted students in the Faculties of Arts, Law, and Humanities will pay N151,200, while returning students who previously paid about N23,000 will now pay N89,200.

“New students in the Faculties of Technology and Science will pay N163,200, while returning students will pay N101,200 for the same faculties.

In addition, new students admitted to the College of Health Sciences and the Faculty of Pharmacy will be required to pay N190,200 (new students) and N128,200 (returning students), respectively.

The returning pupils of the College of Health Sciences, before this development, paid N31,000, while those in the Faculties of Science, Technology and Agriculture paid N27,700. In addition, returning students in the Department of Social Science paid N21,000 each.

Olarewaju stated, “The Senate of the University made the decision at its emergency meeting on Tuesday, September 12.”

“The above fees are only for a single academic session.”

Following the statement, the institution’s student union leadership denounced the increases and declared that they would not stand.

In a statement signed by the president of the Great Ife Students Union, Abbas Ojo, the secretary general, Akinboni Opeyemi, and the public relations officer, Omisore Elijah, they expressed their displeasure with the new fees and stated that they had nothing to do with their creation.
