TCN restores national power grid following nationwide outage – The Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) has assured Nigerians that efforts to restore the national grid are in progress and have reached advanced stages, following the outage caused by the collapse of the National grid in the early hours of Thursday.

According to Ndidi Mbah, general manager of TCN’s public affairs department, electricity is now available in the West, North Central, South, East, and a significant portion of the Northern regions.

Electricity Distribution Companies, such as Enugu Electricity Distribution Company PLC (EEDC) and Abuja Electricity Distribution Company (AEDC), have confirmed that the total grid system operated by the Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) from Osogbo in Osun State collapsed at 12:40 a.m. on September 14, 2023.

According to Mbah, the power disruption occurred after more than 421 days of grid stability.

She explained that although the grid restoration initially encountered a setback, “this does not constitute another collapse.” In any grid restoration procedure, obstacles may arise. Today, while the grid restoration was in progress, this issue arose, but it was quickly resolved.

“It should be recalled that the last complete system failure was recorded on July 20, 2022, and that it has been 421 days since then to September 13, 2023. Prior to this, the system had been stable despite challenges such as zero rotating reserve, lack of System Control, and insufficient Data Acquisition (SCADA) for a strong and stable grid.

According to her, TCN was able to maintain 400 days of grid stability because it devised and deployed internal measures and tools to manage the nation’s grid, thereby ensuring stability.

“Despite the incident, TCN is committed to continuing to do its best to assure grid stability.

“In the meantime, the collapse that occurred after a fire on Kanji/Jebba 330kV line 2 is being investigated in an effort to prevent future occurrences and ultimately strengthen the grid,” she explained.
